FAQs
-
When should I arrive?
Plan to arrive at least fifteen and no earlier than thirty minutes before the performance is scheduled to begin. Entrance after the start of the performance will be accommodated per the discretion of the staff.
-
What are your latest health and safety policies?
Curtis is a global community with people from all over the world visiting our campus on a daily basis. It is our top priority that we keep our community, including our audience members, as safe as possible when they are here at Curtis. Our current safety protocols can be found here.
Thank you for doing your part to ensure Curtis can continue to safely provide the world with outstanding live music!
-
What do most people wear?
Curtis has no dress code. Your experience of the music is what’s important, so wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. You will find a range of attire in the audience from casual to suits and dresses. Many concertgoers wear business attire or casual business attire.
-
Is it important to know the music before I go?
There’s no need to know before you go. Discovering a great piece of music you’ve never heard before in a live performance can be a powerful experience. But if you want to study up, that’s fine, too. For your convenience, you’ll find program notes and links on our event pages with more information about the program and performers.
-
Can I take pictures or videos?
No photography or recording of any kind is permitted during Curtis performances but we invite you to take pictures, selfies, and videos before or after the concert and at intermission.
-
Can I use my phone?
By all means bring your phone, but please be prepared to turn it off—as well as any other electronic devices—before the performance begins.
-
May I bring food or beverages into the performance space?
At Curtis venues—Field Concert Hall, Gould Rehearsal Hall, or the Black Box Theater—no food or beverages are allowed.
On the Kimmel Cultural Campus, no food or beverages are permitted in Marian Anderson Hall or the Perelman Theater. You may enjoy beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), snacks, and treats from the lobby bar before the performance or during intermission.
-
When should I applaud?
There are two reasons for applause in a performance: to greet the performers and to show appreciation.
The audience applauds as the musicians come on the stage. Many works have multiple movements—sections separated by a brief pause. Please hold your applause during these pauses and wait for the end of the larger work. You can keep track of the movements and pauses by looking in your program, where the movements are listed. When in doubt, wait for others before applauding.
-
May I bring children?
Children are welcome at Curtis performances. For full-length orchestra concerts and operas, we encourage parents to consider a child’s developmental level and attention span before purchasing tickets.
-
Anything else I need to know about performance etiquette?
Once the music begins, we request that you avoid talking, whispering, humming, or moving personal belongings. This will ensure that the performers and your fellow patrons enjoy the full benefits of the performance.
If you must leave your seat while a performance is in progress, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest door or ask the nearest usher for assistance. (Note that if you leave during the performance, you will not be allowed back into the hall until an appropriate break in the program.)
-
Are performances cancelled for inclement weather?
Curtis Institute of Music is committed to honoring its performance schedule. Whenever possible, performances will proceed as scheduled despite weather conditions and traffic delays. It is rare for a performance to be canceled due to inclement weather, but if a show is canceled we will post information on our website and social media, as well as notify ticket holders via email. We will make every effort to contact all affected ticket holders.
If the performance is still scheduled but inclement weather makes it impossible for you to attend, please contact the ticket services office at (215) 893-7902. Our Curtis Patron Services team will help you consider all the options. Tickets are non-refundable.
